The Sound of the language

Performance for the project "Blinded Tourist" by M. Videler for W139. March 2010.
Mask, tape recorder, earphones and collection of objects.

"Four artists are picked from the airport, blindfolded, and taken to Amsterdam Warmoesstraat where they stayed during the full 8 days of BLINDED TOURIST, not leaving the building." [http://www.mariellevideler.nl/situaties/Blinded_Tourist.htm]

This work is a performance in which I interact with the Blinded Tourists, four people for the first time in Amsterdam, who never heard Dutch before. They hear the sound of a Dutch word whose meaning is for them unknown: “gracht” (city canal). They are blinded with a mask all the time and I ask them separately to listen the sound, concentrate and tell me how they picture it. I ask them to see the sound and describe it to me. I captured their impressions with a tape recorder and translated them into objects that I brought to their residence space.

Collection of objects: Bottle of water, honey, lemon, red boa, stone, cutlery, bucket, plastic sunflower and watering can.
